How to use JIMMY

Everything in one place: setting up, what you can ask, how approvals work, and what to do when something goes wrong.

Getting started

JIMMY runs on your Windows PC (Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit) and listens to your own WhatsApp chat, the one where you message yourself.

  1. Download the installer and run it. It installs for your Windows user only, with no admin rights needed. If Windows says “Windows protected your PC”, choose More info → Run anyway (the installer isn’t code-signed yet).
  2. JIMMY opens its setup screen. Scan the QR code with your phone, the same way you link WhatsApp Web.
  3. Choose which folders JIMMY may look in, and which apps it may open. You can change both later under Permissions.
  4. Set a PIN under Settings → Task safety. JIMMY asks for it before anything risky, like messaging people or deleting files.
  5. Open WhatsApp, go to your own chat, and send something like system info.

From then on JIMMY starts with Windows and sits in the taskbar tray. Click the tray icon to open the dashboard. Closing the window keeps JIMMY running; use Quit JIMMY in the tray menu to stop it.

Talking to JIMMY

Write the way you would to a person. JIMMY only listens to your own self-chat; messages from anyone else are ignored.

  • “find the invoice from last week”
  • “how much free space is on my C drive?”
  • “find the Jimmy report on my GitHub and send me the link”
  • “what did Rahul email me today?”

Simple requests match a built-in command straight away. Anything else goes to the AI you chose, which works out a single command or a step-by-step task.

Built-in commands

You don’t need the exact words; these are just examples. “Code” means JIMMY replies with a single-use code that you send back to confirm.

Bigger tasks

For jobs no single command covers, JIMMY replies “On it.” and works step by step: it looks in folders, reads files, runs small scripts, checks websites or GitHub, and reads your Gmail if you’ve connected it. It takes at most eight steps, then tells you the result.

Scripts run in a separate workspace folder, and each step goes through the same approval rules as everything else.

Approvals and your PIN

The rules for when JIMMY asks are decided in its code, not by the AI, so a trick message can’t talk it out of asking.

WhatJIMMY
Reading inside your allowed folders, looking things up, read-only checksJust does it
Running new scripts, changing files outside its workspace, opening appsShows you exactly what it will run, and waits for YES
Messaging other people, deleting files, installing software, sending email or data to websitesNeeds YES plus your PIN
Formatting disks, editing the registry, turning off Defender or the firewall, reading saved passwordsNever does it

Reply YES 1234 (with your own PIN) to approve. JIMMY deletes your PIN message from the chat straight away. Set or change the PIN in Settings → Task safety.

Undo

  • Send undo (or /undo) to reverse the last file change JIMMY made. Deleted files are moved to an undo folder rather than deleted.
  • undo list shows recent changes.
  • Before a script that may change files runs, JIMMY backs up the files it names. Backups are kept for 30 days.
  • If a script’s changes can’t be tracked, the approval message says so before you agree.

Skills and shortcuts

When JIMMY writes a script that works for a job that could come up again, it saves it as a skill and reuses it next time. A saved skill only runs without asking if you approved that exact code before, it only reads, and it stays inside your allowed folders.

  • show my skills lists them, show skill <name> shows the code, forget skill <name> deletes it.
  • Teach a shortcut in plain words: remember shot means screenshot, or remember resume is in downloads/2026.
  • The dashboard’s Commands page shows your skills and shortcuts too.

Schedules

Ask for something to happen regularly:

  • “every day at 9am, take a screenshot”
  • “every 30 minutes, system info”

Send /schedules to see them. Scheduled jobs can only run safe actions; anything that would need your approval isn’t run on a timer.

Gmail

Connect it in Settings → Gmail → Connect Gmail. Your browser opens Google’s sign-in; if it doesn’t, the Gmail settings show a link you can copy. Then ask:

  • “what did Rahul email me today?”
  • “draft a reply to the latest email from Rahul saying I’ll send the deck tomorrow”

Searching, reading and writing drafts happen on their own. Sending always needs your PIN, and the approval shows who it goes to, the subject and the text. JIMMY only sends drafts it wrote itself. Disconnect removes its access at Google and deletes the saved sign-in from your PC.

Choosing the AI

Pick the AI under Customize → AI engine. It’s only used when a message doesn’t match a built-in command or a shortcut you taught.

  • Antigravity CLI, if you’re signed in to it (no key needed)
  • OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq or OpenRouter, with your own API key
  • A model on your own PC (Ollama, LM Studio, or any OpenAI-compatible address), so nothing leaves your PC for AI

Before anything is sent to an AI, JIMMY removes things that look like secrets (keys, tokens, passwords, card numbers). See the privacy policy for what goes where.

Updates

Once a day JIMMY checks whether a new version is out. If there is one, you get a notification and an Update available popup with what changed. Choose Update now or Later; nothing installs without you. Your WhatsApp connection, contacts and memory are kept. Customize → App updates has Check now. See the changelog for every release.

Troubleshooting

JIMMY doesn’t reply

  • Make sure you’re writing in your own self-chat, not someone else’s chat.
  • Check the tray icon: coloured means running, grey means stopped. Right-click it and choose Start agent or Restart agent.
  • If WhatsApp was disconnected, open Settings in the dashboard and scan the QR code again.
  • If you sent /stop, unlock JIMMY from Settings.

Windows warns about the installer

The installer isn’t code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you. Choose More info → Run anyway.

Gmail sign-in doesn’t open

Copy the sign-in link shown in the Gmail settings and open it in your browser.

JIMMY can’t find a file

It only looks in your allowed folders. Add the folder under Permissions.

Logs

Right-click the tray icon and choose Open logs folder. Your messages and phone number aren’t written to the log.
